Early Autumn - Apple and Cinnamon

Summary: "Great Product and Excellent Support"
As a member of a team looking at archiving photos for our churches I looked at several Museum Software packages, even purchased one of the more expensive ones, then I found Musarch. The small price paid to purchase the book to get the premium addition is trivial, and the book will come in handy if I need to convert the database. We needed several features that were not in the release we started with and Jim quickly added them. We are delighted with the product and the support we have received.

Summary: "Wonderful way to upgrade great museum resource"
I volunteer for a small non-profit museum, serving as the techie for our computer system and electronic communications. We were faced with a large stack (over 10 years worth) of old paper acquisition and inventory forms, and it was nearly impossible to find anything quickly. We started looking around for software to automate the process. We downloaded a trial version of a "name brand" inventory software, and it was great, but at a price tag of over $800, it was way out of our budget range. I went looking online and found Jim Halpin's freeware Museum Archive software and installed it to compare to the trial version of the expensive program. For the functions that we need in our small-town museum, the Museum Archive program worked just as well and gave us the same basic functionality as the expensive one. I bought the book in order to upgrade to the premium version to be able to get all the available capacity and functions of the program, and to have the book on hand as a reference if needed in the future. The program is great and runs very well on our antiquated computer system with no hitches or glitches. Once you order the book and upgrade to the premium version, you get to keep up with tweaks and mods as soon as they are released, and feedback from the author, when I've needed to make contact, has been very quick and helpful. It's a great program and I'm so glad we found it.

Summary: "Inside the Museum Archive"
Exploring this program for a database for our local Historical Commission. Purchase of this book advertised for an advanced version of the software (basic is free). Advanced is the keyword. Way above our local Commission's abilities to interpret.

Summary: "A Means to an End"
Jim has chosen an unusual way to obtain the full version of his software by requiring the purchase of this book.
While the book is really only targeted at techies, it is a necessary purchase to unlock the full features of his software.
The Musarch software program, while designed as a 'One Size Fits All', had enough configurable settings to suit our museum. Without the purchase of the book, you only have a limited set of options in the basic program. Considering Jim would only be getting a small part of the purchase fee as Royalties, he has shown how he puts people before profit.
Including postage to Australia, this enabled us to buy a database package for our museum for around AU$50.00 compared to the AU$1200.00 the museum was originally facing using a commercial program.
We have found the software very easy to understand and use. The program can be copied to a thumbdrive and different staff can work on a particular part of the museum collection at home, then bring it to the museum and import it into the master database.
One of the best features is records cannot be accidentally deleted. To delete a record, you have to go to a separate menu and deliberately delete it. Also, records are not updated 'On the Fly' but only when you click Save. If you decide your entry is not correct half way through entering it, your data is discarded if you click Cancel. With a lot of database programs, the data is updated permanently as you type and that can quickly result in chaos and frustration, often meaning you have to restore from your last backup - losing all the entries you have made during your current session.
I highly recommend this program and encourage you to see buying this book as a 'Means to an End' and not a book you would actually need to read. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the software's generic nature. But for the price, that is not a major issue and can be worked around with a bit of planning before you enter any data.
